In what’s seems to be a sequel of the old movie from the 70’s (The Bad News Bears) the Coquitlam Red Diva’s finished off the season with a SILVER medal at the U12C Regional Championships on the June 20-21st weekend.
Coming off their league playoff championships, on Sunday the Diva’s headed into the quarter finals vs the #3 ranked New West Royals. Great hitting, aggressive base running and a incredible game ending double play by Jade Pankiw, Diva ‘s win 17-15.
In the semi- final the Diva’s faced the #2 North Shore Eagles. Behind solid pitching from Mikayla Windle and great team hitting the Diva’s were in control of this game from start to finish winning 12 – 9.
In the finals the Diva’s faced the #1 ranked Burnaby Roadrunners. In the first inning the Diva’s scored 5 runs highlighted by Carissa Dedes big hit, scoring Taylor Thate and Jessie Mckinney. Good pitching by Sara Sutherland combined with clutch defense kept the game close as the Diva’s were winning 10-8 after 3 innings. Heading into the top of the final inning, Ashley Smith hit a towering 2 run home run. But the storybook season came to a close as in the bottom of the final inning, Burnaby came back to win the gold 13-12.
Coach Jason Smith commented, just like the movie, our Bad News Diva’s started the season 1 win and 13 loses. The girls finally bonded and turned a corner finishing 4th in the Kamloops tourney and got on a run on the last portion of the season, highlighted with a league playoff championship and a silver medal at the U12 Regionals. These girls played like champions today and I was proud to be a part of it!
Congratulations to the Red Divas!

On behalf of Jen McKellar, Geoff Manson, and all the volunteers who came out to help with our program we’d like to extend a big thank you for being part of our program this year!
We were excited to have had the opportunity to welcome in the next generation of softball players in the Coquitlam/Port Moody area. We sincerely hope the girls had as much fun learning from us as we did teaching them! A special thank you to the parents who stepped up to help with coaching, managing the team, etc. It’s truly a group effort!
Also we will begin Evaluation camps for the 2007-2008 and 2006 Junior Classic teams in September 2015. For those not aware of our Junior Classics program we had 2 teams in 2014-2015. The teams are chosen after the evaluation camp and the players spend the Fall/Winter developing their skills outdoors initially but moving indoors as the weather gets colder and wetter. Special instructors are brought in to help the girls learn the fine points of the game. During the season the team plays a regular schedule of 20 games in the Mite Select League and participates in a number of fun and competitive tournaments around the Lower Mainland!
All eligible players are invited to attend the free evaluation camps. Team rosters are limited to 12 players. If you need more info about the program just let me know at email@example.com
Again thank you for choosing to play softball in Coquitlam and I hope we see you at the park for years to come!

The 99 Classics placed 3rd in Richmond over the May 23-24 weekend.
Finishing 1st in the round robin the Classics defeated the Sunfire 15-0 in the playoff round to move into the semi- finals against Kelowna where the game went into extra innings with Kelowna prevailing. However the Classics then bounced back in the Bronze medal game with an 11-1 victory over Chilliwack.
Well done girls you should all be very proud of the way you played and represented Coquitlam this weekend.
The Coquitlam Red Diva’s went to Kamloops for a tourney May 9,10/15 and lost in the bronze medal game by one run vs Prince George.
For all players that went on this “road trip” this was their first experience of how much fun an out of town ball tourney can be.
On Saturday the girls played 3 games in extreme heat (over 30 C ). The final two games of the day both went to extra innings. “The girls played basically for over 5 1/2 hours straight in the heat, competed and wouldn’t give up”. I was so proud of them! coach Jason Smith stated.
Game MVP’s were – Ashley Smith, Sara Sutherland, Elise Poirier and Mikayla Windle.
The 99 Classics had a great May 9-10 weekend in Kelowna bringing home the SILVER medal in the gold division.
The Classics finished first in the A pool in the round robin and won its opening playoff game to put the Classics in the gold division. From there the Classics beat Causton and North Van to set up the final against the 99 Invaders who took the gold. Great work team!!
